About Me
I am a twenty-five year old visual artist living and working in New York. My work is viewable online
My artist's statement is as follows:
Growing up in the suburbs of Long Island generally makes for an ordinary and sheltered childhood. My story tells differently. I matured amongst an older circle of youths engrossed in the graffiti art movement. Their magnificent work ethic towards publicly re-inventing letters inspired me. I learned I could accomplish anything I put my mind to, even defying gravity. This pursuit produced a life-long practice of aggressive inline skating.
The act of painting graffiti on the side of trains drove my search for new methods of creating motion-based pieces. As I began to study art more seriously, abstract expressionism became a primary influence. Whether I am painting, or fabricating sculpture, this ideology enables me to create gestural works fueled by dynamic action. Locomotion is at the heart of all living beings. One line's path through space dictates another's destination. I explore the inevitable intersections as they reveal themselves.
Recording movement using a variety of mark making techniques defines my most recent work. I employ inline skates to propel myself with continuous fluidity while simultaneously laying down marks. These “energy impressions” were initially produced in the street, my incubator. The infinite expanse of asphalt surrounding me provided an instant arena for experimentation. I sprayed both pressurized water, and aerosol chalk to create the first series. I now apply hand-mixed dyes and paint to canvas and muslin that are stretched adjacently to serve as my work surface. However, their permanent existence does not rival the immediate and raw, unforgiving qualities embedded in the ephemeral media applied to the asphalt. Further exploration will involve the creation of three-dimensional environments to work within, expanding the work into the sculptural realm.
Adventures inside alleyways and train yards confronting and defying the laws governing me produced a sense of elation. The thrill of the trains rushing past; dark tunnels, high-voltage, intrinsically alive and momentous still resonates in me. Committing to the action is essential. The adrenaline coursing through my veins allows no time for doubt, only pure energy, inspiration, and response.
